BMKG wants residents to stay away from the beach, the potential of the Sunda Strait tsunami

Kolom Aktual. Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati appealed to the public to avoid coastal areas or coastlines around the Sunda Strait.

The appeal follows direct BMKG analysis and monitoring with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Geological Agency regarding the volcanic activity of Gunung Anak Krakatau which is feared to have the potential of a tsunami such as on Saturday, December 22, 2018.

"We hereby request that the citizens remain vigilant and avoid the location of the coastal or coastal radius of 500 meters to 1 kilometer," Dwikorita said in a press statement on Tuesday night, December 25, 2018.

In addition to concerns about the potential for tsunamis due to the volcanic avalanche of Gunung Anak Krakatau, the BMKG urged people to stay away from the coastline because at the same time extreme weather and high waves occur in the Sunda Strait.

"Tomorrow morning is still happening and the potential for high ocean waves is happening," he said

BMKG continued Dwikorita, has developed a monitoring system application that focuses on the volcanic seismic activity of Gunung Anak Krakatau, in order to provide a faster warning to the public.

This information can be accessed on BMKG and Geology Agency social media accounts, or 'infoBMKG' and 'MAGMA Indonesia' applications.

"Therefore, we ask the public to continue to monitor the development of information, we will continue to update through social media sites or BMKG mobile info applications and the MAGMA Indonesia mobile application and the Geological Agency," he said.
